March 6, 2024

Many people choose a beautiful rug to add a warm and elegant touch to a room. However, everyday life means that stains often dull the color. All it takes is a few drops of wine spilled at a party or an accidental shoe print to leave your carpet in disrepair.

Fortunately, there are some simple tips for degreasing, deodorizing and sanitizing a dirty carpet. And this, without damaging the textile! So, how do you remove embedded stains from carpet? Here is a practical guide to help you restore the splendor of this design element in record time.

1. Act quickly to remove your carpet

You made a stain on your rug, rug-plain or carpet ? In this case, it is crucial to act quickly.

In fact, the longer the stain remains, the more likely it will penetrate the fibers and become permanent.

Also, get a clean, absorbent cloth and follow the following steps!

  • Remove loose dirt. First dab the liquid gently with a clean white cloth. Above all, don’t rub it, otherwise you risk spreading it. In case of solid non-encrusted stains, you can use a brush and a vacuum cleaner.
  • Dissolve with lukewarm water, without soap or other detergent. Again, gently dab the dirty area, this time using a damp cloth. Then, blot up the liquid using a dry cloth.
  • Sprinkle with potato starch and allow to dry completely before vacuuming.

2. Test on a small, hidden area before removing a stain from rug or carpet

Are the previous steps not enough to get rid of the dirt? In this case, you can use a textile stain remover.

However, before applying detergent to the spill, we recommend carrying out a test on a small, hidden part of the carpet. The goal is to ensure that the household product will not damage or discolor the fibers.

3. Choose natural products to clean your carpet

We advise you to avoid using harsh chemicals (such as chlorinated products) which could damage the carpet fibers. Instead, opt for natural cleansers.

For example, you can mix a small amount of white vinegar with warm water to treat common stains.

For grease stains, sprinkle them lightly with baking soda, leave for a few hours then vacuum up.

4. Use specific solutions to remove all types of stains

Of course, there are substances that we have difficulty getting rid of despite our efforts! In reality, each trace corresponds to the recipe that will remove this dirt.

Here are some (non-exhaustive) cleaning solutions you can use.

  • For wine stains: use a cloth dampened with sparkling water or diluted white vinegar.
  • For coffee stains: mix a teaspoon of mild dishwashing liquid with lukewarm water.
  • For ink stains: soak a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol.
  • For urine stains: Moisten the affected area with equal doses of water and household vinegar. After 10 minutes, dab alternately using damp and dry cloths. Finally, dab with a disinfectant diluted in water.
  • For blood stains: Dilute two tablespoons of salt in a liter of cold water.
